This course is for the healthcare professional who wants to add an exciting modality to their existing skillset to help their clients. The following is a comprehensive four hour course from Buteyko Clinic International with detailed instruction on how to teach this method for a variety of complaints including respiratory, sleep disordered breathing, anxiety, panic attacks, high blood pressure and craniofacial development. A breakdown of lectures is below.
Section 1 is a theoretical description of breathing physiology, the effect of dysfunctional breathing patterns on health and the science behind the Buteyko Method. Section two provides detailed step by step instruction for healthcare professionals to teach each breathing exercise from the Buteyko Clinic Method.
Instructor Patrick McKeown is considered a foremost authority in the world to teach the Buteyko Method. Accredited by the founder of the method, the late Dr. KP Buteyko, Patrick has worked with thousands of clients as well as having written seven books including three best sellers in their respective fields. The Oxygen Advantage is Patrick’s latest book and is aimed at athletes wanting to reach new heights with their sports performance.
Each aspect of teaching the Buteyko Clinic Method is relayed in simple terms during this four hour presentation. All exercises are explained from a variety of view points, including practical demonstrations by our model Katherine. Also, included is a detailed format for each client based on their health, age and breathing. This comprehensive course provides the tools to allow you teach a highly efficacious technique for addressing dysfunctional breathing problems.
INTRODUCTION BY PATRICK MCKEOWN
LECTURE 1: CHRONIC HYPERVENTILATION SYNDROME
In this video, you will be introduced to the history of chronic hyperventilation and how to recognise the typical characteristics in your client population. Identify in a matter of minutes whether your client exhibits dysfunctional breathing patterns.
LECTURE 2: STRESS AND BREATHING
Stress has a profound influence to breathing causing the respiratory rate to become faster, deeper, more noticeable and often through the mouth. To counteract stress, the typically instruction to take a deep breath – to take a large breath of fresh air into your lungs is entirely the wrong thing to do. Instead, to evoke the relaxation response, gently slow down and soften breathing to improve blood flow and the delivery of oxygen to the brain. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing a calming effect on the body and mind.
LECTURE 3: HOW SHOULD WE BREATHE?
In this video, you will be introduced to efficient breathing habits. Supported with references, healthy breathing is light, quiet, effortless, soft, through the nose, diaphragmatic, rhythmic and gently paused on the exhale. This is how human beings breathed until the comforts of modern life changed everything, including our breathing.
LECTURE 4: BREATHING PHYSIOLOGY EXPLAINED IN SIMPLE LANGUAGE TO FACILITATE UNDERSTANDING
Learn breathing physiology including the functioning and regulation of breathing, the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve (how oxygen is released from the blood to the cells), relationship of breathing with blood pH, and how breathing influences blood circulation and opening and closing of airways.
LECTURE 5: NASAL NITRIC OXIDE: THE MIGHTY MOLECULE FOR GOOD HEALTH
Nitric oxide is sometimes referred to as the mighty molecule. This molecule is secreted from the sinuses into the nasal cavity, and with each breath it travels into the lungs and passes into the blood. Nitric oxide plays fundamentally vital roles in the human body including the sterilisation of incoming air, reversal and prevention of high blood pressure and cholesterol, maintenance of homeostasis (keeping the body in balance) along with neurotransmission (how the brain cells communicate with each other).
LECTURE 6: NOSE BREATHING TO IMPROVE OXYGEN UPTAKE AND TRANSFER TO THE CELLS
It is well documented that breathing through the nose is very important for good quality sleep, airway dilation, improved oxygen uptake in the blood and oxygen transfer to the cells. In addition, nose breathing during childhood is imperative to normal development of a childs face and airways. Spending the first few years of life with the mouth hanging open results in changes to the shape of the face of the child- leading to a less attractive face and increases the risk of lifelong obstructive sleep apnea.
LECTURE 7: EFFECTS OF HYPERVENTILATION SYNDROME
According to the late Dr Claude Lum, chronic hyperventilation affects any organ or system to different degrees. The negative effects of chronic hyperventilation on respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, anxiety, sleep, energy levels and speech production as well as overall health are listed.
LECTURE 8: MEASURING BREATHING VOLUME
Measure the breathing volume of your clients using the Control Pause. The length of time that one can hold their breath for comfortably provides a measurement of breathing volume, that is supported by a number of researchers from 1975 to the present day.
LECTURE 9: BLOCKED & STUFFY NOSE (RHINITIS)
Often thought of as an innocuous habit, this lecture details the science of the negative effects of rhinitis and open mouth breathing on common and debilitating complaints including asthma, sleep disordered breathing, ADHD and craniofacial developments.
LECTURE 10:Breathing & Vocal Dysfunction
Speech is the culmination of two essential human functions: breathing and communication. We must consider all the factors in relation to one another. A disturbance in one area will upset the balance necessary to maintain healthy phonation.
LECTURE 11: NASAL OBSTRUCTION STUDY
A study to investigate the effectiveness of the Buteyko technique on the nasal symptoms of clients with asthma. Results showed a reduction of nasal symptoms including snoring by 70% at three month follow up.
Section two: Methods to Establish Nasal Breathing and Diaphragmatic Breathing to Improve Client Performance During Therapy Sessions
LECTURE 12: STEP BY STEP: TEACHING THE BUTEYKO CLINIC METHOD
Outlined in this video, is how to introduce the Buteyko Clinic Method to your clients and helping them identify any dysfunctional breathing patterns that they may have. Learn how to explain the role of normal breathing and the benefits associated with developing efficient breathing habits. Having the client experience the positive changes from applying the breathing exercises is an important motivator to ensure long term progress.
LECTURE 13: CONTROL PAUSE MEASUREMENT
The theory behind the breath hold time as a measurement of breathing volume. Identify possible mistakes by your client and watch a demonstration of how to measure the control pause.
Included is a detailed account of the significance of the control pause, the relationship between the control pause and breathing volume and the factors that slow down CP progress.
LECTURE 14: GUIDELINES
Contraindications and cautions are listed. For example, know which exercises to teach to clients presenting with high blood pressure, panic attack, anxiety and other complaints. Help your client deal with a possible detoxification of their body as their control pause increases.
LECTURE 15: BREATHING EXERCISES
Each exercise is listed along with the four categories of clients. This enables easy understanding and tailoring of the Buteyko Method to each client regardless of age, condition or breathing pattern.
LECTURE 16: EXERCISE 1: DECONGEST THE NOSE
This video introduces the theory and practicalities behind the nose decongesting exercise along with a demonstration of the exercise. Demonstrate to your clients how to decongest their noses within three to five minutes- without the need for medication or over the counter remedies.
LECTURE 17: EXERCISE 2: REDUCING BREATHING VOLUME
This exercise forms the core of the Buteyko Method, the purpose been to reset the breathing center in the brain to a more normal breathing volume. Patrick demystifies teaching reduced breathing, and explains every aspect in step by step detail to ensure that you are able to assist your client in their practise. Identify if your client is doing it incorrectly? What is the ideal air shortage? What is the easiest way to explain it to your client? How to avoid mistakes?
LECTURE 18: EXERCISE 2 – HANDS ON CHEST AND TUMMY
The first format of reducing breathing volume involves taking your client into awareness of their breathing, and providing step by step instruction to soften and slow their breathing to create the ideal air hunger- without tension and stress.
LECTURE 19: EXERCISE 2 – FINGER BLOCKING NOSTRIL
This simple approach to the reduced breathing volume is suitable for children and teenagers along with some adults who may have difficulty applying the first approach. This approach can be useful convey the concept of air hunger.
LECTURE 20: EXERCISE 2 – CUPPING HANDS
Especially formulated by Patrick, cupping hands is an excellent barometer for clients to feel their breathing, soften it and create the air hunger. The added advantage is re-breathing of carbon dioxide to help reset the breathing center to a more optimal breathing pattern.
LECTURE 21: EXERCISE 2- IMPORTANT POINTS
Included is a list of commands and sentences which have proved very helpful in communicating the reduced breathing exercises. A special emphasis is placed on the client not deliberately interfering with their breathing muscles. In other words, allowing breathing to soften with relaxation, hands on chest and tummy and breathing awareness.
LECTURE 22: EXERCISE 2- ADVANCED
Advanced reduced breathing involves merging of reduced breathing volume along with diaphragmatic breathing. Techniques are provided to activate a stiff diaphragm. Patrick teaches a model how to apply diaphragmatic breathing. Helping clients with reverse breathing is also demonstrated.
LECTURE 23: EXERCISE 2 – SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR
How do you know whether your clients are practising the breathing exercises correctly? What signs to look out for to ensure that they have tolerable air shortage? For example, one of the signs includes increased watery saliva in the mouth which is a sign that the bodies parasympathetic tone has been activated.
LECTURE 24: EXERCISE 3 – WALKING WITH MOUTH CLOSED
Conveying the importance of walking with the mouth closed is important, as mouth breathing is usually very common during all types of physical exercise. Understand how to get the most from physical exercise and improve physical fitness by optimising breathing during rest and physical exercise.
LECTURE 25: EXERCISE 4A – WALKING WITH SHORT BREATH HOLDS
Walking while holding the breath to create a small to medium air hunger. This exercise can be incorporated as part of a clients normal exercise routine- allowing them to make faster progress while at the same time retaining control of their breathing.
LECTURE 26: EXERCISE 4B – WALKING WITH MEDIUM TO STRONG BREATH HOLDS
Similar to lecture 17A, this exercise involves incorporating breath holds into walking to create medium to strong air hunger. The benefits are faster progress, an improved control pause along with better health.
LECTURE 27: EXERCISE 5- STEPS FOR CHILDREN, TEENAGERS AND HEALTH ADULTS
Understand how to teach children and teenagers including how to motivate with a detailed listing of the health benefits including improved sleep, concentration and improved sports performance. Also, included is the importance of breathing to ensure normal development of the face. The reality is that mouth breathing often leads to craniofacial changes including a longer face, narrow jaws and crooked teeth. This section describes how to impart this to a child without creating a complex or stigma.
LECTURE 28:EXERCISE 6- MANY SMALL BREATH HOLDS FOR COUGH, WHEEZE, STRESS OR PANIC ATTACK
Many small breath holds is applied upon the first signs of asthma symptoms, stress, anxiety or panic attack. This gentle exercise helps to calm breathing volume to normal physiological levels. Exercise 6 is specifically designed to take control of hyperventilation.
LECTURE 29: NUANCES WITH CLIENTS
In this video, instruction to applying the Buteyko Method across a wide spectrum of clients with varying health concerns is explained in step by step detail. With consideration of medication, severe asthma, high blood pressure, panic attacks and more. What to do if progress is stubborn.
Lifestyle Factors For example, persons working in an office who are under stress and talking all day, eating processed foods with no time to do physical exercise need to be especially aware of their breathing.
Having a low Control Pause and mouth breathing contribute to the following sleep related issues: Snoring, Sleep apnoea, Disrupted sleep, Nightmares, Asthma symptoms (3am-5am), Needing to use the bathroom at about 6am, Children wetting the bed during the night, Fatigue first thing in morning, Dry mouth upon waking and Symptoms upon waking- blocked nose, wheezing, coughing or breathlessness.
LECTURE 32 -DIET
The relationship between diet and breathing is examined. Listed are types of food which are best avoided or limited in quantity. Also understand when to talk about diet during your sessions.
LECTURE 33 – PHYSICAL EXERCISE
Reduce breathlessness during physical exercise to get the most from it. Teach your clients how to breathe during rest and physical exercise to improve fitness levels safely and quickly.
LECTURE 34 – DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF CLIENTS
A detailed program is provided with step by step instruction to teach any person who exhibit dysfunctional breathing patterns. Four main categories of clients with seven exercises are listed. Knowing the four categories enables you to provide a tailored program for each of your clients to make maximum progress. This eliminates guessing work of the practitioner, and allows new practitioners to avail of Patrick’s experience first hand. Everyone from a child of five years of age right through to an older person of 90, across a variety of complaints can be provided with a specific program.
LECTURE 35: LOW CP, OLDER PERSON, UNWELL
Lighter and more gentle exercise including lifestyle guidelines are provided to ensure safe progress.
LECTURE 36: PANIC ATTACK, ANXIETY, SLEEP APNEA, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Taking into consideration each condition, exercises are tailored to bring the client into the air hunger slowly and over a period of time to ensure maximum progress with minimum effort.
LECTURE 37: CHILDREN/TEENAGERS
Working with children and teenagers to ensure that exercises are practised correctly and diligently. Listed are the factors that motivate this group, including Patricks experience from having worked with many hundreds of children and teenagers. Teaching each exercise in simple language to help ensure that the child understands at their level.
LECTURE 38: BUSY ADULT
Most people are time poor. This section is about how to incorporate the instruction into a busy adults way of life. How to teach the method including the number of sessions, the length of each session.
LECTURE 39: TEACHING BUTEYKO
Wrapping up, this video is about the logistics of working with your clients. Included is a list of recommended number, length and organisation of each session. Detailed instruction of what to teach during each session is explained, along with expected client progression from week to week.
