Dr. Allison Adams was recognized as one of the top dentists in New Jersey in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. Allison received her dental degree in 1991 from UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School in New Jersey. She has a general dental practice and provides comprehensive dental care. She has completed a comprehensive post-graduate program in orthodontics and over the past 25 years has travelled extensively attending continuing education courses to discover why teeth are crooked and why our faces look different now than they did a century ago.
Allison’s interest in breathing as a part of dentistry began with making oral appliances for adults who have sleep apnea. However, after recognizing that adults with apnea used to be children with improper breathing, she committed to identifying the compromised children in her practice and working toward prevention. Now, all children in her practice are screened for mouth breathing and overbreathing, and if at risk, instructed in the Buteyko method. Buteyko breathing is incorporated in all orthodontic treatment plans and Allison is seeing positive results not just with tooth position, but with reduction of asthma and impulsivity, and improved attention.
The practice also instructs adults who have issues with anxiety and sleep disordered breathing, using the Buteyko method to restore good breathing habits. As a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, Allison is able to help diagnose and treat both snoring and sleep apnea. She recognizes the importance of a good night’s sleep and knows that whether it is “just snoring” that is disturbing a bed partner, or the more dangerous Obstructive Sleep Apnea that puts you at higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.
