BUTEYKO BREATHING INSTRUCTORS CANADA

Ciaran Image

Ciaran McKeown BA, MA Counselling & Psychotherapy, FBPI

Ciaran McKeown learnt Buteyko in the early 2000s as a way of managing his asthma and anxiety. Impressed by the efficacy of the method he worked with his brother Patrick McKeown to incorporate it into his breathwork training and therapy sessions for over 15 years. During this time he has taught students with a diverse range of abilities and needs through voluntary and paid classes.

A registered counsellor and Samaritans volunteer, Ciaran believes that to be a good teacher, personal experience matters just as much as professional proficiency. He says that both are what enable you to relate to your students and find solutions that fit them.

For new students to the Buteyko method, particularly those who suffer from anxiety, he advises that they experiment with the exercises and treat the techniques as being a way to discover their breath rather than be overly demanding of themselves. At least for the first couple of weeks. This is why he prescribes every student with a unique plan.

What is Ciaran up to now? He currently teaches students and practitioners through one to one online and face to face classes.

IMG 0559Dayle Abraham – Canmore, AB

Dayle has been a Buteyko practitioner since 2010, and a Buteyko instructor since 2018, and as well attended the Oxygen Advantage
instructor’s course in 2019. She also has a 20 year background in yogic breathing techniques and movements, and has her RYT200.
Dayle uses breathing and moving modalities to empower individuals to level up and reach their health goals (sport, improve asthma, increase energy, etc). Generally, Dayle works to increase lung capacity and tissue oxygenation, which leads to better health— the respiratory system literally connects and influences every other system of the body. The ultimate goal, however, is to improve moment-to-moment breathing habits for sustained vitality no matter what stage of life. Dayle firmly believes that breath education is the missing piece in our modern world. We know about and make choices about diet and exercise, but do we do the same with breath? It is time to start!!

Kent EarleKent Earle, PT – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

I am a licensed practicing physiotherapist working out of a large rehabilitation centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I work with a wide range of clinical populations including musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and recently Long COVID patients. I also work on our Multidisciplinary Assessment Team in the development of rehabilitation programs for third party insurers.

I have recognized over the past few years, and particularly highlighted in work with Long COVID, low back pain and craniofacial pain patients, the frequent presence of concurrent dysfunctional breathing patterns. I have been utilizing breathing retraining strategies to assist patients in improving their symptoms and pain management. I enjoy working with all age ranges of patients from children to older adults in helping them to recognize how their breathing pattern is contributing to their symptoms, the impact of dysfunctional breathing on many aspects of their lives, how to train to optimize their breathing, and hearing the benefit they report from this simple, yet often overlooked, fundamental activity of breathing.

Ricardo B. Serrano, Dipl. Ac. – North Vancouver, BC

I am a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner since 1980 with Qigong, Tai Chi and breathing exercises. I have found that incorporating Buteyko breathing exercises with physical exercise and other traditional healing arts like Qigong and Tai Chi helped to a greater degree to cure my personal and my clients’ health challenges like high blood pressure, panic attacks, snoring, fatigue and eye problems.

The Buteyko method of breathing which I have been practicing for a few years is a simple, fast way to cure almost all health problems because of its biochemical, biomechanical and psychological effects in the body-mind connection especially in these post-pandemic stressful times we are all experiencing now. I find that incorporating Buteyko breathing strengthens the immune system because of its normalizing and eventual restoring of lung functions. It’s use increases breathing capacity and calms the sympathetic nervous system. It also helps open the airways, improves blood circulation and sends oxygen throughout the body.

I am thankful that the Buteyko Breathing International was founded to supply me the products, knowledge and certification for health professionals in the medical and alternative healing modalities.

As a complementary and reading practice to the Buteyko breathing method, I have written two reference books: Return to Oneness with the Tao ( https://amazon.com/dp/0987781960 ) and Six healing Qigong sounds with mantras ( https://amazon.com/dp/0988050269 ) Thank you for your interest!

Dr. Steve Piper – Vernon, BC

Dr. Steve Piper – Vernon, BC

As an evidence-based chiropractor, I have always been a forward-thinking human body mechanic. I have 12 years of education and use a hands-on approach to treatment and therapy. First and foremost, any good chiropractor should help you move better and for your entire life. Including your breath.

I believe in a move first mentality as a way of life: we are born to move and sometimes pain and dysfunction present challenges. This is where I can help. Let my movement-based approach and past post secondary education be your first line of defence. I started seeing a lot of patients with paradoxical breathing patterns, high respiratory rates and more over not responding to traditional chiropractic care.

I began continuing education courses on breathing. To date I have utilized Buteyko, Oxygen Advantage and Wim Hof method breathing techniques. These are extremely helpful in my practice.

My patients range from weekend warriors, high level athletes to seniors struggling with respiratory ailments.
