Breathing and digestion may seem like separate functions, but they are more connected than you might think.
The way we breathe can interact with the nervous system, the diaphragm, and the gut-brain axis, all of which may be relevant to digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
This has sparked interest in breathing and gut health, including whether breathing techniques like the Buteyko Method could play a supportive role. So, what does breathing have to do with IBS, and what does the evidence say?
What Happens in the Gut With IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects how the gut functions and communicates with the brain. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or a combination of these.
Several processes can contribute to what happens in the gut with IBS:
- Changes in gut motility: Food and waste may move through the digestive tract too quickly or too slowly.
- Increased gut sensitivity: Normal gas, stretching, or intestinal movement may feel uncomfortable or painful.
- Bloating and distension: Changes in gut motility and sensitivity can cause pressure and a feeling of fullness.
- Stress responses: Stress can influence digestive activity through the nervous system.
An important part of this picture is the gut-brain axis, the two-way communication between the digestive system and the brain. The vagus nerve plays a central role in this network, connecting the brainstem to major organs, including the heart, lungs, and digestive system.
In fact, around 80 to 90% of vagal nerve fibers travel from the body toward the brain. The brain is therefore continually receiving information about what is happening in the gut and other organs.
Stress can affect this communication. During the fight, flight, or freeze response, the sympathetic nervous system becomes more active. Heart rate and breathing increase, while digestion slows. The parasympathetic nervous system acts like a brake, supporting the calmer "rest, digest and repair" state.
Stress does not cause every case of IBS, but this close relationship between the brain, nervous system and digestive tract helps explain why symptoms may change during stressful periods.
The Connection Between Breathing and Gut Health

Breathing and digestion are connected through the autonomic nervous system. This system regulates many processes we do not consciously control, including heart rate, digestion and aspects of breathing.
The vagus nerve provides an important link. It is a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system and is involved in regulating the heart, lungs, and digestive system.
Breathing is particularly interesting because, unlike most automatic functions, we can consciously change it. Slowing and regulating the breath can influence the balance between sympathetic "fight or flight" activity and parasympathetic "rest and digest" activity.
Research into Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) provides an example. In the 1990s, psychologist Paul Lehrer and colleagues studied a technique that slows breathing and synchronizes it with heart rate changes. This interaction is closely related to respiratory sinus arrhythmia, or RSA, the natural variation in heart rate with breathing.
Studies on HRVB have found benefits across several conditions, particularly those involving stress and autonomic regulation. Researchers have also identified IBS as a condition in which this type of breathing-based training may be effective, although controlled studies are still needed for many specific applications.
This is one reason the relationship between diaphragmatic breathing and gut health is worth exploring. The aim is not to control digestion directly with the breath. Instead, breathing offers a practical way to influence the nervous system that communicates with and regulates the digestive tract.
Can gut issues affect breathing?
The relationship can also work the other way. Bloating and abdominal discomfort may make breathing feel restricted or uncomfortable. Stress from digestive symptoms can also make breathing faster, heavier, or more irregular.
Dysfunctional breathing has been linked to many symptoms, including anxiety, fatigue, pain, and irritable bowel or bladder symptoms. This does not mean dysfunctional breathing causes IBS, but it shows breathing, stress, and digestive symptoms can overlap.
A 2002 study found dysfunctional breathing can affect the musculoskeletal system, linking it to chronic symptoms like lower back pain, fatigue, anxiety, and irritable bowel or bladder issues.
Likewise, IBS may occur alongside feelings of breathlessness, but persistent or unexplained shortness of breath should not automatically be attributed to the gut and should be medically assessed.
Does Deep Breathing Help Digestion and IBS?
Deep breathing may support digestion, but "deep" should not mean taking the deepest breath possible.
In the Buteyko approach, functional diaphragmatic breathing is quiet, gentle, and efficient. Repeated large breaths, especially through the mouth and upper chest, can increase breathing volume beyond what the body needs, causing overbreathing.
Why might deep breathing help with IBS? One explanation involves the autonomic nervous system. Stress increases sympathetic activity and can reduce digestion. Slower, controlled breathing may encourage parasympathetic activity and help the body return to its "rest, digest and repair" state.
The vagus nerve is important here. It helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system and forms part of the communication pathway between the brain and digestive system.
By slowing the breath and bringing breathing and heart rate rhythms into greater synchrony, HRVB is designed to improve autonomic regulation.
Evidence from a 2004 study suggests that this type of training can help restore balance in the nervous system, while IBS has been identified as one area with potential for further application.
This does not mean slow breathing has been proven to correct IBS or normalize gut motility. IBS is complex and involves several factors. The stronger argument is that slow, controlled breathing may support nervous system regulation, which affects digestive function.
The key principle is simple: slow and gentle is more important than big and deep.
Why Does the Buteyko Method Help IBS?

The Buteyko Method is a breathing technique focusing on slow, light, nasal, and diaphragmatic breathing. Instead of encouraging repeated deep or forceful breaths, it aims to reduce unnecessary breathing volume and develop a calmer, more functional pattern.
With IBS, its potential value lies mainly in the connection among breathing, stress, the vagus nerve, and the autonomic nervous system.
Buteyko breathing may support this process by:
- Reducing overbreathing: Breathing becomes lighter, quieter and more controlled.
- Supporting parasympathetic activity: Slower breathing may help the body shift away from prolonged fight-or-flight activation.
- Engaging the diaphragm: Functional diaphragmatic breathing is closely connected with breathing efficiency and autonomic regulation.
- Encouraging nasal breathing: Buteyko prioritizes breathing through the nose rather than habitual mouth breathing.
- Supporting recovery from stress: A slower, softer breathing pattern provides a practical way to help the nervous system return to a calmer state.
This is important because the goal of Buteyko is not simply relaxation. It is to improve the underlying breathing pattern throughout the day.
There is also some evidence of an overlap between dysfunctional breathing and digestive complaints. Dysfunctional breathing is linked with a range of chronic symptoms, including irritable bowel or bladder symptoms, anxiety, fatigue, and pain.
This does not prove that dysfunctional breathing causes IBS. Nor is there enough evidence to say that mouth breathing directly causes gut problems. Instead, it suggests that poor breathing patterns can coexist with broader nervous system and physical symptoms.
The Buteyko Method should therefore not be presented as a cure for IBS. A more evidence-based view is that its focus on slow, light, nasal, and diaphragmatic breathing may help improve breathing patterns and support autonomic nervous system regulation.
Because the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system are closely involved in gut-brain communication and digestion, this provides a plausible reason to explore Buteyko as a supportive approach for people with IBS.
Better Breathing for Better Gut Support
IBS is complex, but the connection between breathing, the vagus nerve, and the nervous system makes functional breathing worth considering as part of a wider approach to digestive health.
