Does breathing change because of aging? In many cases, the answer is yes. Aging can affect the lungs, chest, breathing muscles, and the effort required to breathe during everyday activities.
Maybe you've felt it yourself. A flight of stairs that used to be nothing now leaves you a little winded. It's easy to brush off, but our breath often tells us more about how our body is aging than we realize.
Today, you'll find out exactly how aging changes the way you breathe, why shortness of breath becomes more common with age, and what you can do to support healthier breathing going forward.
How Does Aging Affect the Respiratory System?
The respiratory system changes gradually as we grow older. The lungs lose some of their natural elasticity, the chest wall becomes stiffer, and the muscles involved in breathing may weaken.
Together, these changes can reduce respiratory reserve, which is the body's ability to increase breathing when additional oxygen is needed.
An older adult may breathe comfortably at rest but become winded sooner when walking uphill, carrying groceries, or climbing stairs. The lungs can still function well, but physical activity, illness, and stress place greater demands on them.
Does breathing rate change with age?
Aging does not automatically cause faster breathing at rest. A healthy older adult may have a resting breathing rate similar to that of a younger adult. The difference is often more noticeable during physical activity.
An older person may breathe faster or more heavily during exercise because:
- The lungs have less elastic recoil.
- The rib cage cannot expand as freely.
- The diaphragm and other respiratory muscles may be weaker.
- Reduced activity has affected strength and fitness.
- The body has less reserve when responding to physical demands.
So, how does age affect breathing rate in humans? It does not simply make breathing faster. Resting breathing may remain relatively stable, but the rate can increase more noticeably during exertion. Fever, pain, anxiety, medication, anemia, and heart or lung conditions may also affect breathing rate.
Aging can also weaken the cough reflex and make it more difficult to clear mucus from the lungs. This may increase the risk of chest infections and slow recovery. Regular movement, avoiding smoke, and managing existing respiratory conditions can help protect lung health.
Aging and Shortness of Breath
Can aging cause shortness of breath? Natural changes in the lungs, chest, and breathing muscles can make demanding activities feel more difficult. However, severe, persistent, or unexplained breathlessness should not be blamed on age alone.
Reduced lung elasticity and chest movement mean breathing may require more effort. Inactivity can reduce cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength. As a result, ordinary activities may feel more demanding.
This explains why some elderly people get out of breath or breathe heavily while walking, bathing, dressing, or climbing stairs. Breathing may become faster, louder, or shallow. Worrying about not getting enough air can make the breathing pattern more strained.
Shortness of breath with aging may be related to:
- Reduced physical fitness
- Weaker respiratory and skeletal muscles
- Asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Heart disease
- Anemia
- Respiratory infections
- Sleep apnea
- Anxiety or panic
- Medication side effects
- Excess body weight
Mild breathlessness after strenuous activity may reflect reduced fitness or respiratory reserve. Breathlessness during light activity, rest, or lying down is different and should be medically assessed, especially if new or worsening.
Why breathing through the mouth increases with age
Age-related changes in breathing can also happen during sleep. Research suggests that combined mouth-and-nose breathing becomes more common as people grow older.
A 2004 study examined sleep breathing in 41 adults aged 20 to 66. The group included people who snored and people who did not. Researchers measured how much time each person spent breathing through the nose, mouth, or both.
Adults aged 40 and over were about six times more likely than younger participants to spend over half their sleep in combined mouth-and-nose breathing. This finding concerned oro-nasal breathing, not continuous mouth-only breathing. It showed an association with age rather than proving aging directly causes mouth breathing.
Another study involving 116 adults found a relationship between nasal airway size and the tendency to breathe through both the nose and mouth. This suggests that nasal obstruction may contribute to changes in breathing route during sleep.
These findings matter because the risk of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea increases with age. Sleeping with the mouth open may cause dry mouth and throat, while mouth breathing can accompany sleep-disordered breathing.
Seek a professional sleep assessment if you or someone you care for:
- Snores loudly
- Wakes up choking or gasping
- Appears to stop breathing during sleep
- Wakes with a very dry mouth
- Experiences morning headaches
- Remains unusually tired during the day
The 2004 study provides useful evidence about how oro-nasal breathing during sleep may change with age.
How the Buteyko Method Supports Healthier Breathing With Age
The Buteyko Method is a breathing-retraining approach developed by Ukrainian physician Professor Konstantin Buteyko. It teaches people to breathe gently and quietly, through the nose whenever it is comfortable and appropriate.
Instead of encouraging repeated deep or forceful breaths, the method focuses on three parts of functional breathing:
- Breathing volume: Breathing an amount of air that matches the body's needs
- Breathing mechanics: Allowing the diaphragm to work instead of relying mainly on the upper chest
- Breathing rhythm: Breathing slowly, quietly, and steadily
These principles may help older adults develop greater awareness and control of their breathing. However, they cannot reverse biological aging or restore the lungs to a younger state. Terms such as "anti-aging breathing" and "reverse aging breathing" should refer to supporting healthy aging, not reversing a person's biological age.
1. Restore comfortable nasal breathing
The Buteyko Method encourages nasal breathing while resting, sleeping, and during manageable physical activity. The nose filters, warms, and humidifies inhaled air. Nasal breathing may also help prevent dry mouth and throat linked to sleeping with the mouth open.
Why do elderly people breathe through their mouth? Possible reasons include:
- Nasal congestion or allergies
- A deviated septum or another structural obstruction
- Reduced muscle tone during sleep
- Snoring or sleep apnea
- Habitual mouth opening
- Heavy breathing during the day
- Difficulty maintaining nasal breathing during activity
Mouth breathing does not cause aging. However, regularly breathing through the mouth may contribute to dryness, disturbed sleep, snoring, and less comfortable breathing. There is no specific age when mouth breathing becomes impossible to change.
Research with 633 people used a three-minute nasal-breathing test to see if participants could breathe comfortably through their noses. Over 80 percent who reported almost constant mouth breathing while awake completed the test comfortably.
This suggests mouth breathing can continue as a habit even when enough nasal airflow is available. However, breathing retraining cannot fix serious structural blockages. Persistent difficulty breathing through the nose should be assessed by a doctor or ear, nose, and throat specialist.
2. Practise Breathe Light
Breathe Light is a foundational Buteyko breathing exercise. It involves making the breath softer, quieter, and slightly smaller without forcing or straining.
To practise Breathe Light:
- Sit comfortably with your back supported.
- Relax your shoulders, jaw, and upper chest.
- Close your mouth gently.
- Breathe quietly through your nose.
- Take a slightly softer and shorter breath in.
- Allow the breath out naturally.
- Continue until you notice a mild, manageable need for air.
The need for air should remain subtle. Your breathing should feel smooth and controlled throughout the exercise. If it becomes jerky, uncomfortable, or stressful, return to normal breathing and rest.
Older adults should start slowly. Anyone with a serious heart or lung condition should consult a qualified healthcare professional before practising reduced-volume breathing or exercises involving breath-holding.
3. Supporting nasal breathing during sleep
Some people use MyoTape to encourage the lips to rest together during sleep. These products may help when mouth opening is mainly habitual, but they do not treat sleep apnea, nasal obstruction, or other underlying conditions.
Before using any form of mouth support at night:
- Make sure you can breathe comfortably through your nose while awake.
- Do not use it when your nose is blocked.
- Seek assessment for loud snoring, choking, gasping, or suspected sleep apnea.
- Avoid using it after drinking alcohol or when feeling nauseated.
- Consult a healthcare professional if you have a significant heart, lung, neurological, or sleep-related condition.
The safest approach is to find out why the mouth opens during sleep before trying to keep it closed.
When to Seek Medical Help
When an elderly person cannot breathe properly, breathing exercises are not the immediate solution. Sudden or severe breathing difficulty may be a medical emergency.
Contact emergency services immediately if the person:
- Is gasping or visibly struggling for air
- Cannot speak in complete sentences
- Has blue or grey lips, skin, or fingertips
- Develops chest pain or pressure
- Becomes confused, faint, or unusually drowsy
- Loses consciousness
- Develops sudden swelling around the face, lips, or throat
- Experiences a rapid and unexplained worsening of breathlessness
Do not ask someone in severe respiratory distress to practise Buteyko exercises, reduce their breathing, or hold their breath. Do not give them food or drink. Emergency medical care must come first.
