Buteyko Instructors – California

Ciaran Image

Ciaran McKeown BA, MA Counselling & Psychotherapy, FBPI

Ciaran McKeown learnt Buteyko in the early 2000s as a way of managing his asthma and anxiety. Impressed by the efficacy of the method he worked with his brother Patrick McKeown to incorporate it into his breathwork training and therapy sessions for over 15 years. During this time he has taught students with a diverse range of abilities and needs through voluntary and paid classes.

A registered counsellor and Samaritans volunteer, Ciaran believes that to be a good teacher, personal experience matters just as much as professional proficiency. He says that both are what enable you to relate to your students and find solutions that fit them.

For new students to the Buteyko method, particularly those who suffer from anxiety, he advises that they experiment with the exercises and treat the techniques as being a way to discover their breath rather than be overly demanding of themselves. At least for the first couple of weeks. This is why he prescribes every student with a unique plan.

What is Ciaran up to now? He currently teaches students and practitioners through one to one online and face to face classes.

jan diorJan Dior – California

Jan Dior battled with asthma since the age of five. She read in 2013 that OTC Primatene Mist would stop being sold. Jan was using it several times daily for asthma relief for over fifty years. Having studied healthy living and nutrition her whole life, she didn’t want to rely on doctor visits to control her asthma. Praying for a non-medical natural approach to end her asthma, her prayers were answered when she discovered The Buteyko Breathing Method. It was life changing for Jan; within a month of daily practice she noticed she wasn’t using her reliever medication as much. After three months she wasn’t using it at all. Jan now knows her mission – to help others with asthma learn the Buteyko Method of Breathing and end their daily battle. After studying at UCLA under Patrick McKeown, the current leading authority of Buteyko, she says, “How can I NOT share this! ” Jan is also trained to help you with panic attacks, sleep disorders and sleep apnea, COPD and allergies.

Serving LA, Riverside, OC and San Diego counties.  Private lessons in your own home or on Zoom. I guarantee my work.

Hello everyone!
Hi I just wanted to share a really special client with you. A young gentleman called me in May and asked if I could help him get into the Navy. The Navy won’t accept people that are using inhalers. I told him we could give it a try and that he had to do Exactly what I teach him. He entered Boot Camp in August and I wished him well and was a little nervous because it was “boot camp” (hard to do!). He calls me in October from a bus with all his buddies from the Navy and wanted to let me know that he graduated Boot Camp and thanked me profusely for teaching him Buteyko. It made my day and my year! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Change your breathing or stay the same.

2samantha weaverSamantha Weaver – Los Angeles

Samantha Weaver is the director of the AOMT, The Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, based in Los Angeles. As a myofunctional therapist, it became clear that asking patients to breathe through their nose was more than just a structural issue, and this is what led her to study Buteyko with Patrick McKeown.

She now implements Buteyko breathing in the treatment of both kids and adults. Working with children has been a lifelong passion. She is the author of “Tucker the Tongue Finds his Spot,” and is working on a series for children about nose breathing. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, London Center for Speech Studies, and Utah State University where she studied Communicative Disorders.

She is passionate about facilitating healthy breathing through the Buteyko method.

Ann has been a Buteyko Breathing Educator since November of 2008. Her initial training was completed with Patrick McKeown of the Buteyko Breathing Clinic with additional training with Christine Bauman and Robert Litman in March of 2011. Her work centers around relaxation techniques using hypnosis and the Buteyko Breathing Method to improve symptoms of asthma and other breathing difficulties. These techniques are also used in teaching people how to physically relax. Her breathing program, combines both techniques to help people learn how to relax and cope with stress. As you learn how to relax, your body will change its breathing patterns to a more manageable rate and volume.

4JoyJoy Moeller – Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills

Joy Moeller’s background as a dental hygenist was the impetus for her to train in myofunctional therapy. Her life’s work has been in helping children, teenagers and adults perform correct swallowing and breathing in order to ensure proper development and growth of the jaws and face. Incorrect swallowing and mouth breathing creates cranio-facial changes which significantly impair both health and appearance of the child or adult. Part of this involves the elimination of habits such as nail biting and thumb sucking.

After taking the Buteyko training, Joy now weaves the Buteyko exercises into her therapy program. After practicing oral Myofunctional Therapy for 30 years, the combination of Buteyko Breathing and Myofunctional Therapy has helped Joy’s patients attain a much higher state of health than ever before! Because one of the goals of oral myofunctional therapy is to attain nasal breathing, Buteyko therapy helps the medulla part of the brain to know that it is ok to nasal breathe resulting in better oxygenation!

Joy is a guest speaker at the UCLA Sleep Apnea Mini Residency where research will be conducted on helping sleep apnea.

11christiemckenzieChristie McKenzie – Palm Springs / Coachella Valley

Christie McKenzie suffered with severe asthma and allergies for over 30 years which left her very little quality of life. She relied on daily medication and a rescue inhaler which provided inadequate relief.

Along her journey of attempting to obtain better health she pursued various alternative health options. Unfortunately, none of them helped. In fact her doctor said the asthma had become so severe he didn’t see her living past mid-30’s.

She heard about Buteyko from a fellow life coach and with some hesitancy she decided to check it out. Her thorough research and dialogue with Patrick McKeown convinced her that she had finally found some extremely powerful and exciting information. She decided to not only take the classes to better her own health, but also became a Certified Instructor so she could be of service to others.

In addition to obtaining her Buteyko Instructor certification from Patrick McKeown, Christie McKenzie is also a certified Master Instructor in NLP and Hypnotherapy. She is a Life Coach fulfilling her passion of teaching others how to powerfully create the life of their dreams physically, mentally and spiritually. All of this starts with understanding how breath is the core of our wellness on all levels.

I work with clients with asthma, allergies, and anxiety; as well as athletes interested in learning to obtain better performance while reducing lactic acid. I also work with clients on stress reduction. If you have a situation of which you would like to know if Buteyko can help, contact me and let’s chat.

chad lund imgChad Lund – Carlsbad, California

I am an endurance athlete with a thirst for knowledge, always needing to know why. Perhaps this is why I became an educator. As I continued down the path of health and wellness I have developed and adopted pillars of importance and a hierarchy of health. Which is breath, movement, and aerobic conditioning.

Nothing in the body works in isolation or perhaps not very well. As a long-time endurance athlete, I initially embraced the no pain, no gain mentality and inevitably had to embrace the pain. By taking a big step back and really looking at how well the body functions when all systems are in harmony. This then led me down the path to a holistic view of training. The breath being the most important, then proper movement of the entire body, and finally aerobic training which focuses on the endurance system within the body. After more than a decade in endurance sports I feel healthier and stronger than ever.

My goal as a coach is to help you in your journey to health. I am a teacher first and a teacher is a facilitator of learning, my job is then to give you the experiences which will enlighten you to the understanding of what true health means, and this starts with the breath. Along with being a Buteyko Instructor and Oxygen Advantage coach I am a certified trainer with multiple certifications in movement and endurance. My goal is to get you healthy and create a platform from which you are able to live life to the fullest and accomplish whatever goals you set forth. While I started with endurance athletes my programs apply to anyone interested in improving their health through breath and movement.

Patrick Leland imgPatrick Leland – San Francisco Bay Area – Petaluma, California

My breathing had been dysfunctional my entire life, since I was a baby until I was 50 and as a result, I had a multitude of health issues. As a child I was sick often, had digestive issues, ADHD and a learning disability. As an adult: asthma, poor circulation and an irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), all of which were getting progressively worse. I was starting to feel pain in my feet, perhaps the beginning stages of neuropathy.

In February 2020, 18 months ago as of this writing and at the age of 50, I committed to doing breathing exercises and mindfulness meditation for 15-30 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. The first six months I did a variation of Dr. Andrew Weil’s ‘Relaxing Breath’: inhale for 4 seconds in the nose and exhale for 8 seconds out the mouth. Over those first six months I was seeing modest and gradual improvement in my health.

In August 2020, I read ‘Breathe’ by James Nestor and learned of the late Dr. Konstantin Buteyko which led me to Patrick McKeown of the Buteyko Clinic. I immediately started doing Buteyko breathing exercises and taping my mouth shut at night and as a result, the improvements in my health have been astounding.

As of the present day, August 2021, my arrhythmia episodes that began in 2016 and that were getting more frequent are gone. My lifelong poor circulation that had been getting worse has improved for the first time in my life and significantly. The mild to moderate asthma which I’d had for 25 years and which was also getting worse, is completely resolved. Lifelong digestive issues have improved by 90% or more. My mental and emotional resilience, my ability to focus and concentrate and my willpower are the strongest they’ve ever been in my life.

I’ve practiced Yoga for 30 years, taught Yoga for 10 years and now, as a newly certified Buteyko instructor, I’ll teach individuals of all ages and groups alike the Buteyko method and mindfulness meditation so that they, too, can significantly improve their health of body and mind. I will also teach athletes, both amateurs and professionals, whom will realize tremendous results from these methods, as well.

I teach in person, locally and via video conference, worldwide.

M.A. en Educación

¡Hola!

Me llamo Clara y me fascina respirar.

Tal vez preguntes. ¡Pues, empecemos a respirar!

Sinceramente,

Clara Evans

Kecskes Marton AdorjanKecskes Marton Adorjan

After struggling for 23 years with seasonal depression, social anxiety, allergies, frequent colds that would turn into full blown asthma attacks followed by hospitalization and having conventional symptomatic treatment (inhalers, steroids) Mr. Ady first learnt about the Buteyko Method in Hungary in 2013. It was a lifechanging experience. It was the first time ever he regained control of his health, became asthma free and could manage more easily his anxiety and depression. Regaining his health, finishing his Masters studies in Music & Education he embarked on a global journey and became a digital nomad. After dedicating 1000s of hours and several years learning informally about human behavior (one of his passions), traveling/working/living in more than 55 countries and further refining his own Buteyko Self-Practice with other elements (Clinical Dietary Protocols) he decided to become an accredited and certified Buteyko Clinic Practitioner in 2020. His dedicated self-practice allowed him to achieve great results (4-6 hour sleep, 30-40 sec MCP/BOLT score). He is mostly based in Asia with occasional relocations to Europe & the Americas. Aside from his dedicated profession he is also interested in languages (being fluent in 4), cultures (continues to travel), personality psychology (to tailor & customize his services, Big5) and the latest cancer research (PKD, metabolic health) and on a broader scale about lifestyle disease in general.

To make the Buteyko Method more accessible in Asia he provides online instruction at very low cost!!!

Dr. Rebekah Ehde PhotoDr. Rebekah Ehde – Ventura County

Dr. Rebekah Ehde is a Ventura County, California, dentist whose airway-focused dentistry goal began when her young son developed significant sleep and breathing issues. In Dr. Ehde’s search for answers, she learned that 80 percent of today’s children have underdeveloped facial structures and airways (including the jaw), leading to poor breathing habits, sleep issues, and learning difficulties. Finding help for her son, Dr. Ehde became passionate about helping other children and parents combat this modern-day epidemic.

Dr. Ehde’s goal is all about using a team approach when it comes to the overall health of her clients, based on each person’s unique needs. This is especially important in helping prevent or treat a myriad of health issues related to the lack of stable sleep caused by poor airway development. These include asthma, ADHD, chronic rhinitis, tics, anxiety, and depression. She works with a team of specialists including myofunctional therapists, nutritionists, occupational therapists, and sleep physicians.

Dr. Ehde is a regular attendee of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH), where pertinent healthcare professionals work together to keep up to date regarding new research and education in the field of oral health in all its aspects. She is also a provider of Vivos Therapeutics, utilizing FDA-approved devices to encourage natural growth of jaws and airways.

As part of her overall therapy, Dr. Rebekah Ehde holds classes on Buteyko breathing and myofunctional therapy. You can find her at Camarillo Smiles or the Sleep and Breathing Institute in Camarillo, California.
