buteyko liverpoolChris Aspinall – Liverpool

Chris Aspinall received his Buteyko Breathing Technique diploma studying under Patrick McKeown and teaches privately and runs courses in Liverpool.

JoelJoel Jelen – Liverpool

Joel is a Member of the BPI Management Board. He also has the role of Public Relations Advisor. Joel is also the founder of www.breathren.co.uk and was a pupil of Dr Len McEwan, one of the founding fathers of Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome (CHS) research & treatment. Joel also completed training in the Buteyko Method with Patrick McKeown.

The main focus of Joel’s work is helping people to identify often hidden hyperventilation and how it is typically the missing piece in the ‘holistic jigsaw of health’ as he refers to it. He has helped a diverse range of people from children and young people to those in their 70s with a vitality for life but tainted by respiratory-related conditions. Joel works alongside GPs and dentists via whom he receives regular referrals as the evidence of Buteyko method increases amongst new generations of the medical profession.

“Helping people become aware of the traits and causes of over breathing along with the methods to improve our breathing, productivity and associated quality of life is what inspires my work.”

A typical month for Joel involves a range of work from one to one consults with e.g. asthma sufferers and those with chronic fatigue who want to excel in sport again to companies looking to enhance their wellbeing at work programmes.

Another ambition of Joel’s is to use more than 25 years of media experience to assist the Buteyko breathing method, Buteyko Professionals International and associated people to win the recognition they deserve in helping to change people’s lives.

I am an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist and Buteyko Breathing Practitioner, with 20 years experience as a Speech and Language Therapist, across a range of settings.

My specialist practice focuses addressing and treating orofacial myofunctional and breathing disorders (such as mouth breathing, incorrect tongue rest posture and swallow, tongue thrust, dribbling), all of which, because of the complex relationship between these systems, contribute to poor sleep, poor nervous system regulation, dysfunctional/compensatory oral habits (speech and swallowing issues) and overall poor posture and health.

When there are coexisting speech or communication difficulties, I can use my skills in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy/sensory oral -motor therapy, to work alongside traditional speech therapy. Providing this systemic input will greatly enhance communication goals. Always BREATHE FIRST.

Sarah Hague – South ManchesterSarah Hague – South Manchester

Hi, I’m Sarah, I’ve been teaching Yoga in South Manchester for over 20 years. I was first introduced to yoga at the age of 16 and since that time I’ve practiced all sorts of Yoga styles and learnt from lots of wonderful teachers.

Over the last few years I’ve become fascinated with working with my breath. After a major life event I found myself constantly breathless, anxious and suffering panic attacks. I tried to draw on my prior knowledge of mindfulness techniques but found these aggravated rather than healed my agitated state. I was fortunate to come across 2 books which had a profound effect on me – Patrick McKeown’s “Oxygen Advantage” and Robin Rothenberg’s “Restore Your Prana” and spent the next few years studying with both teacher to restore my own breathing while also learning to teach these amazing techniques. Having come from an Ashtanga background where big, loud breaths were praised it was a revelation to discover that breathing LESS might be more healthy and more healing.

I’m now qualified to teach both the Buteyko Method and Restoring Prana. I’m able to use a range of buteyko and yoga techniques to help you access functional breathing in your body.

Both the Buteyko Method and Restoring Prana have the same aim – to lead you to breathe functionally (lightly, quietly, using the diaphragm) but use different practices and techniques to get there. I’m fortunate to have all this knowledge to draw on so that I can find the right practices for you.

Because of my own background, I’m particularly interested in helping people struggling with anxiety but am keen to help anyone who feels their breath could be more comfortable.

Bio photoWendy Jefferson – Thirsk, North Yorkshire

My name is Wendy and I live in North Yorkshire and am the founder of Breathe in Yorkshire.

My story to finding Breath-work

A few years ago now, I started to notice my mind had become overwhelmed and I struggled to keep control of my emotions and my health and especially my sleep started to really suffer. I had always found walking, running and wild swimming helped to calm and connect me, but now there was a missing link. In that moment of panic or stressful situation I needed something in that moment to help me focus and calm me down. During a late night Google I came across Patrick McKeown’s podcasts which had input from leading experts/scientists from around the world, delving deep into the way we breathe and the effects it can have on our health. After watching some of his YouTube videos/tutorials I started to see benefits in my own health, realising this was the missing link to a more balanced life. The way we breathe has a profound effect on our bodies both mentally and physically and I was eager to learn more and see how I could improve other parts of my life.

This was the start of my personal journey to better health and the reason for training to be an Instructor. The first thing I noticed was an improvement to my sleep, had control over my mind, better focus and concentration. Physically, my fitness improved, I recovered faster, my digestion improved, I had more energy and my lower back pain improved. I felt like I was me again! I have found that there is always more we can learn if we are willing to be open to different/new ideas.

The benefits of cold water therapy

I have been a cold water swimmer for 16 years now, having learnt from various leaders in this field. Now I understood the synergy cold and breathing played in our mental and physical well-being.

The cold water is a shock to the system, you learn to control your breathing, the nervous system and focus the mind. The more I studied the breath, the more I realised how misunderstood its importance on our health truly is. Working with the cold and breath benefits sleep, concentration, performance, inflammation, blood pressure, heart rate, reduces stress, anxiety as well as a myriad of other benefits.

Now a qualified, Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage Instructor my journey had begun to help others live a happier and healthier life, working on both mental and physical well-being.

I work with individuals treating specific conditions such as anxiety, stress, inflammation, trauma, insomnia and ways to increase your fitness through breath-work or a combination of breath-work and cold water therapy. I also work with small groups to teach skills for a more balanced life through both breath-work and cold water therapy.

Start your journey, invest, trust and take control of yourself.

Based near Louth Lincolnshire as a counsellor / therapist working in the mental health field specialising in anxiety/ depression and stress. I have become passionate about assisting people to gain the tools that enable them to regain control back into their lives at a time when they feel perhaps adrift and pressured by modern life expectations. My practice is now a blend of these disciplines.

Having developed asthma and Rhinitis later in life and added to this four of my six grandchildren have respiratory problems has stimulated my interested in all aspects of breathing and hence the Buteyko training to attain more in depth knowledge which perfectly complements my existing work offering an extra dimension. I see a great deal of clients with breathing challenges also sleep deprivation and understand how dishabituating this can become. Buteyko ProfileJames Wimbleton – Derby

James has over 23 years of experience working with clients to achieve their health goals. This experience has been cultivated through a range of settings, working in roles in Health & Fitness, in the Metropolitan Police Service as a PTI & Rehabilitation Therapist, and in his current role in the NHS working in Physiotherapy.  He’s experienced in working with children through to adults, and has worked with people of all different abilities, from life limiting conditions through to athletes,

James had been aware of Patrick McKeown’s work through his own interest in health optimisation. Through James’s own trauma, he discovered he’d developed dysfunctional breathing patterns so he used the Buteyko Method to not only to fix his breathing, but to optimise it. Following this experience James felt called to assist others to improve their quality of life whether it’s to treat anxiety, asthma and other breathing disorders, or simply to optimise breathing for better health or sports performance.

James will see clients in person and also remotely. For a free 15 minute consultation you can contact James via the following methods.

Terry MellorsTerry Mellors – Lincoln, Lincolnshire

Buteyko Method Instructor, Wim Hof Instructor

Terry found his own way to breath and cold in order to help himself initially. The results were so life changing for him, he re-trained and founded The Breathing Effect  https://thebreathingeffect.co.uk as a platform to pass it forward.

“I have been struggling with my mind most of my life. Having found a key to some relief,

It seemed a natural progression to not only practice these amazing techniques but also teach them. There are so many people needing help. Becoming a Buteyko instructor (under Patrick McKeown) has opened a door for me to be able to provide that help.”

“Now I have an outlet to combine my life experiences into my workshops giving me a unique empathic approach to teach the Buteyko method to all ages and all backgrounds”

Asthma, Breathing disorders, Sleep disorders, Anxiety

Which of course all lead to improved well being.

Attending a Professionally guided course, learning how to breathe properly will take you on a much deeper journey into the biochemical as well as biomechanical effects on your body and perhaps more importantly your mind and emotions, whilst in a safe nurturing environment.

Knowing that amazing results can come so quickly gives me drive and enthusiasm to teach you the Buteyko method in a simple, creative and memorable way, intending that you not only leave each class having had an enjoyable experience.

But also, with an intuitive understanding of how your inner body systems can be influenced towards healing today’s growing list of illnesses by breathing correctly.

The results can be truly amazing.

Edina PalkoEdina Palko – Kettering and Corby, Northamptonshire

Craniosacral therapist and Reiki master

Edina originally trained as a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist, then later retrained as a Visionary Craniosacral Therapist as she found the Visionary work was more profound and offered deeper healing.

During her Craniosacral Therapy training, Edina learnt to treat babies with various conditions  including tongue tie and that’s when she discovered that she herself had tongue tie too. This explained so many things in her life and took her on a new journey. With tongue tie, the tongue has restricted movement, which creates tension in the face, neck and upper back, affecting breathing, swallowing and posture.

Edina soon learnt that correcting poor tongue position and correcting dysfunctional breathing can change lives for the better. That’s how Edina discovered the Buteyko Breathing Method and found it so helpful that she decided to train to become an instructor.

Edina is highly intuitive and concentrates on finding the root cause of the problem rather than treating the symptoms.

Edina has great experience helping people with:

  • anxiety,
  • stress,
  • trauma and PTSD,
  • insomnia,
  • vertigo,
  • teeth grinding,
  • neurological issues,
  • IBS and ulcerative colitis,
  • aches and pains,
  • headaches and migraines.

Edina found that incorporating the Buteyko Breathing Method into her Craniosacral Therapy sessions had a much more profound effect on her clients.

Untitled 1 1Jill Watkins – Stroud, Gloucestershire

My background is as a Dental Hygienist and Therapist and I qualified at Kings College University London over 10 years ago. I have worked mainly within NHS dentistry and have spent several years as an Oral Hygienist at a hospital, working with people undergoing cancer treatment and with children having orthodontic work.

During this time working with patients and helping them achieve healthier mouths, I have become more and more interested in the relationship between how breathing and muscle function influences not only dental health but conditions such as asthma, sleep apnoea and overall health.

As a chronic asthmatic and mouth breather for over 30 years, my life has been transformed by being introduced to the Buteyko Technique and am now symptom and medication free. This inspired me to take Patrick’s course and then further training as an Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist.

Louise Beckett - WalsallLouise Beckett – Walsall

My 20+ year career as a Personal Assistant and in Business Development led to me working alongside some wonderful Myofunctional Therapists and Buteyko Breathing Practitioners. In this role, I became involved in administering, moderating and running groups for children’s breathing. Being part of the transformational changes to their sleep, focus and wellness inspired me to train in Buteyko Breathing Method, myself.

I pride myself on listening to my patients’ needs, and guiding them at a pace that works for them. I am passionate about helping my patients to reach their personal goals, and improve their health, mental wellbeing and focus, through breathing re-education.

I am also keen to work with children’s sports teams in order to improve their sports performance through the breathing techniques.

Based in North Birmingham, sessions can be conducted Face 2 Face (location depending) or online.

Harriet RuddyHarriet Ruddy – Warwickshire & London

Hi, I’m Harriet! Having trained in Oxygen Advantage, Buteyko and with the Conscious Breathing Institute, it really is a privilege to share functional breathing and all its benefits with the wider community. I am based in Warwickshire and London.

I teach 1-1 and group sessions to varying age groups and abilities, in person and via zoom. Increasingly I work with school children, helping them understand how to manage their nerves and stress, particularly when exams are looming. I wish I’d been taught how to breathe properly at school!

I was lucky enough to come across breath work in my twenties, when I was suffering from panic attacks and I was able to cure myself with the help of a homeopath at the time. But it wasn’t until I was able to help my own child who struggles with ADHD that I came full circle to breath work again and was reminded of its real power.

I passionately believe that health starts with the breath and it is humbling to be able to help people find awareness of their breathing and watch them improve and often transform their health once they have connected with their own, free and life giving tool.

Untitled 2Chris and Katrina Puckey – Suffolk

Chris and Katrina, husband and wife and Buteyko Instructors, became enthusiastic about progressing their skills in the Buteyko Method when they found that just by using one simple technique recommended by Patrick McKeown in his book ‘The Oxygen Advantage’, they were able to improve important aspects of health of many of their clients. In their Tuina massage therapy clinics in Suffolk, they noticed a correlation between mouth-breathing in clients and a particular set of health symptoms. As they investigated further, they noticed that while clients were receiving their massage faced down on the massage bed, those who kept their mouths open would find that their noses would become stuffy and uncomfortable and they became over-energised and less relaxed during their massage. Chris and Katrina found that by asking the client to gently tape over their mouths during the massage it would lead to increased calm, an ability to deeply relax, reduced anxiety, and reduced muscle tension. Asking clients to also try mouth taping at night led to much deeper sleep, less waking, less or no snoring, more energy during the day and the whole household also subsequently benefitted.

Chris and Katrina then realised that all of the special techniques of the Buteyko Method as taught by Patrick were going to be essential in progressing the health of their clients even beyond what nutrition, dietary changes, and physical massage could achieve. If after doing all the ‘right things’ their clients were going home and breathing in the wrong way, night and day, any progress made to health during the day would rapidly be reversed especially during exertion, and most especially at night.

Chris and Katrina have developed a series of workshops to explain in a simple way with slideshows and videos, how overall health and particularly respiratory health is directly affected by the way in which we breathe. The Buteyko methods are taught by demonstration and repetitive practice during the session. Measurements are taken before and after the practice of the methods so that improvements can be seen, in some cases immediately, but certainly over the course of sessions. The group format of the sessions is enjoyed by participants because of the sense of working toward something together even if only while attending those group sessions, and group participation encourages attendees to practice at home to ensure consistent improvements. Following on from the course, there are opportunities to return for regular reminder and encouragement sessions to keep attendees on track with their practices. This is a good opportunity to Regain the process of using healthy breathing and provides a point in our lives to Turnaround accumulated stress.

These workshops are an adjunct to Chris and Katrina’s previous workshops which encompass food fermentation and food preparation skills for health recovery. These workshops grew out of Chris and Katrina’s health restoration – Chris from osteoporosis and 3 tumorous masses in his liver, he now has the bones of a 25 year old, his liver is restored and Chris is full of energy and verve! – and Katrina’s experience of health restoration from Bowel Disease from the age of 9, and almost complete disablement from rheumatoid arthritis with joint deformities from the age of 21. Workshops are an opportunity for Chris and Katrina to share their own research and experiences with others, and over the years they have supported many people with diverse health problems through to recovery. Some of their workshops run together so that health restoration through nutrition, diet, far infrared therapy, Tuina Massage and good breathing practices with Buteyko can all be learned together. Chris and Katrina’s workshops are also very supportive and helpful for those on ketogenic diets.

Chris and Katrina call their process of health and knowledge acquisition ‘The Regain Turnaround’ – ‘Regain’ control of one’s own body, and vibrant health through health wisdom, ‘Turnaround’ old habits, old ways, unhelpful beliefs, and a downward spiral to ill health.

Dysfunctional breathing is often one of the last things that I think you would consider when trying to improve your performance in your sport, research suggests that dysfunctional breathing is quite common in athletes. If you are a runner, martial artist, or team player, training your respiratory system could be a key factor in improving your performance whether you are just starting out or a seasoned performer.

Having worked with many sportspeople over the years from injury to performance as a Sports Chiropractor, I am interested in helping local sports people develop good breathing habits for health and performance.

It is all too easy to miss out on training the respiratory system especially as it can be glanced over if you are not looking at how you breathe, not realising that your breathing may be affecting how well you are training or performing.

Harriette WightHarriette Wight – Hertfordshire

Hi, I’m Harriette, Breathwork practitioner and coach. I discovered breathwork through Yoga back in 2015 and have been hooked ever since. Originally training as a Pranayama and Mantra teacher and now a certified Buteyko instructor, I work with people to connect the body and the mind using the breath as a bridge.

Predominately working with people with fast paced, high pressured jobs, I work with you to find a way to bring in breathwork to your day-to-day life. Allowing you to relieve anxiety, sleep better and find mental clarity all by simply using your breath. Having had a career in corporate event management, I understand the pressure of fast paced environments and the affect it can have on individuals. I have experienced and seen the difference breathwork can make on people and would love to share it with you.

So why not see how I can support you, to find time in your day, help you sleep, discover mental clarity and importantly destress. I would love to have a chat with you.

Stephanie Ingram - PeterboroughStephanie Ingram – Peterborough

Steph has worked within the NHS setting and with people experiencing a variety of respiratory conditions since 2015. Qualifying in 2020 as a physiotherapist, working across multiple specialities & since 2021, primarily working in children’s physiotherapy.

Focusing on her own journey and inner world since 2022, Steph finished working full-time in the NHS and concentrated on developing herself personally & professionally. Since completing the Buteyko Training in June 2023 which felt like ‘‘the missing part of respiratory physiotherapy’’, The Breathing Way was founded.

‘’Realising my own dysfunctional breathing pattern and looking at anxious thoughts has helped me to understand how important breathing training is for a calm mind, focus and self-regulation, amongst many other benefits’’.

The Breathing Way is centred around compassion, honesty, integrity & autonomy. As a holistic physiotherapist & breathing coach, Steph felt it was important to bring her own values to work & with clients.

‘‘For me it is so important to have a space that feels safe & where you can be met with compassion. Everyone is going through something & as humans, sometimes we just need to be seen & heard, which I felt wasn’t the case in a busy hospital setting. That’s why I am pleased to offer group and 1-1 sessions depending on each individual’s preference and where they feel most comfortable.’’

Now working privately, Steph offers group, 1-1 and corporate sessions, which can be face to face in and around Peterborough, or online via Zoom.

“Steph I loved your kind, nurturing wisdom and guidance. You made it fun as well as informative. I love how you held space and allowed us to experience what we needed to. You were the perfect facilitator.”    ~ Ruth

Ciaran ImageCiaran McKeown BA, MA Counselling & Psychotherapy, FBPI

Ciaran McKeown learnt Buteyko in the early 2000s as a way of managing his asthma and anxiety. Impressed by the efficacy of the method he worked with his brother Patrick McKeown to incorporate it into his breathwork training and therapy sessions for over 15 years. During this time he has taught students with a diverse range of abilities and needs through voluntary and paid classes.

A registered counsellor and Samaritans volunteer, Ciaran believes that to be a good teacher, personal experience matters just as much as professional proficiency. He says that both are what enable you to relate to your students and find solutions that fit them.

For new students to the Buteyko method, particularly those who suffer from anxiety, he advises that they experiment with the exercises and treat the techniques as being a way to discover their breath rather than be overly demanding of themselves. At least for the first couple of weeks. This is why he prescribes every student with a unique plan.

What is Ciaran up to now? He currently teaches students and practitioners through one to one online and face to face classes.

I am a breathing instructor and a self-improvement coach based in London. My passion is to help people feel healthier through natural and inexpensive methods.

I started studying mind-body-related techniques a decade ago when I fell ill with meningitis. The aftereffects put me in front of a choice – healing naturally or medicating myself. My health radically improved over the years and I gained detailed knowledge and experience on bio hacks to take control of my body and mind.

Buteyko as a method is the ultimate technique because it encourages educating the client on physiological processes in the body. It is a tailored approach for each need and aims at a long-term biochemical and biomechanical shift. It teaches the essentials to heal and take control of the body.

He has two adopted children who are now adults. They both experienced adverse experiences in their birth family and spent time in the foster care system and there are also some special educational needs and accompanying diagnoses that have and continue to require support.

Prior to his wellbeing career, Nigel spent many years working in the corporate world as a senior marketing executive but, after a bout of unexpected illness which conventional medicine did not seem able to cure, he started to explore alternative therapies and found that changing his breathing style combined with relaxed time in nature made his symptoms disappear.

I take a functional approach when dealing with clients and believe that it is essential to treat the cause, not just the symptoms. I am patient-centred, encouraging people to look at all aspects of their life, including; diet, sleep, stress, exercise, and, of course – breathing, since they are all interlinked.

I am registered with the British Menopause Society. I am certified in their CBT course to help with hot flushes and insomnia. I have also completed a Grey Area Drinking course to support those who dislike their drinking habits and find it hard to stop.

I have battled anxiety, insomnia, hot flushes, and fatigue. I have seen firsthand the immense benefits that nasal breathing and the Buteyko method provide. It is a straightforward yet outstandingly effective process that provides a solid base on which everything else can be built.

ButeykoWorthingSwami Kriyamurti Saraswati -Worthing

Swami Kriyamurti trained in yoga while living 12 years with her guru, Swami Atmananda, disciple of Swami Satyananda Saraswati of Bihar School of Yoga, India. She returned to England and opened Bihar School of Yoga Worthing in 1986, where she runs classes and workshops in yoga and meditation. When Kriya came across the Buteyko Method, she felt inspired to learn about it in depth, for herself and for others, as a path to health. Yoga and Buteyko have much in common: in yoga, the breath has always been considered a significant factor in the development of man, physically and mentally. And the meticulous research conducted by Professor Buteyko into the inefficiency of our breathing habits demonstrates scientifically how breathing impacts positively and negatively on every aspect of our being.

gemma ferrier imgGemma Ferrier – Oxford

Our breath is life enhancing. After just 3 minutes of limited oxygen, most people experience serious problems, but how often in our daily life do we think about how we breathe? We know the importance of drinking enough water and the type of foods we eat, but something as simple as breathing is taken for granted. Breathing can change your life.

A nurse for over 20 years in many areas of acute primary and secondary healthcare, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of looking at the whole body in conjunction. The breath affects our whole body; how our muscles work, how our brain functions, how we respond when we are stressed and anxious, and perhaps most importantly, how we sleep. 70% of our energy comes from our breath. Your breath is your energy delivery system.

Breath-work requires no equipment, we have everything we need right inside of us. We all breathe, so we can all benefit from developing an awareness of our breath; a new focus and understanding of something you have been doing since you were born, whatever our movement and activity levels.

I have experienced the power of increasing the awareness of my own breath and the impact on my general health and wellbeing. As a qualified breath-work practitioner I want to support others to learn how to harness their breath and to explore the many ways that breath-work can positively impact all aspect of their life.

Viv Davies imgViv Davies – Ashford, Kent

My name is Viv, I am based near Ashford, Kent. I also work online.

Having had asthma since childhood, I know firsthand the impact of diminished breathing capacity can have on a wide range of health issues. I learnt Buteyko first 20 years ago, but it wasn’t until I relearnt from Patrick McKeown that I was able to make the breathing techniques work and fit into my life as a mum of 4 and carer for my elderly parents.

Following my son’s life-threatening asthma attack the importance of healthy breathing had a new focus in my life.

Learning Buteyko has had had such a positive effect on me and my family, managing my asthma, PTSD, anxiety and improving my sleep. I want to be able to share these benefits with others. Before learning these techniques, I would rely only on medication to manage my health but finding the answer in my own breathing has been very empowering.

I believe in managing health and well-being in a holistic way. All my work is client centred, meeting my clients where they are at. I am also qualified in Indian Head Massage.

I teach Buteyko breathing to children and adults, with asthma, anxiety, insomnia and sleep apnea.

sam1 1Samantha Fischer – New Forest Hampshire

Hi, my name is Samantha and I run a holistic/remedial treatment room in the beautiful New Forest in Hampshire. Along with Buteyko Method I am also a Bowen therapist and reflexologist.

I came to Buteyko after a frankly horrendous menopause experience, and trained with Patrick McKeown in 2016.

The Buteyko Method has opened my eyes to the amazing health benefits that can be achieved just by optimising your breathing habits, and more importantly, dealing with poor breathing habits!

The breath is fundamental to life and yet its’ rhythms are often overlooked by professionals when someone presents with poor health.

I have been using breath work, meditation, qigong & tai chi for 18 years, which in itself gave me a deep level of satisfaction. However, I became intrigued in other facets of breathing when I formed i-Qi-coaching.

I had encountered the Buteyko method before and enjoyed the counterintuition of the breath work. Not least, as I thought it may enable me to self-medicate with my lack of nose breathing and nocturnal snoring habits.

It has worked on both counts and joining the Buteyko course with Patrick McKeown and the other instructors opened my eyes to the greater possibilities of helping more.

The Buteyko method now sits alongside my wellbeing work and helping individuals, companies and schools manage their anxiety & stress through breath work and the above disciplines.

I am based in the city of Brighton & Hove and my clients consist of individuals with breathing difficulties, such as asthma, sleep apnoea, or suffer from anxiety, stress or high blood pressure. My school work, helps children from year 3 upwards, breathe through their nose and give them simple tools to improve their breathing and help them achieve greater focus. I am available face to face and online.

BreathGal – Hi my name is Mel & I’m a Breathcoach. I can help you empower the simplest yet most influential health tool available to you – your breath.

After experiencing many other wellbeing modalities; I realised breathwork was the most invaluable tool in helping individuals learn how to empower themselves to live with improved physical, mental & emotional wellbeing.

Breathing and its potential effects on our lives, both positive and negative, are vast. Dysfunctional breathing has a significant impact on multiple physiological & emotional systems, resulting in symptoms and deficits, usually attributed to other causes.

On average we breathe 20,000 times a day, & we can train our breath to improve our physical, mental & emotional well-being. I work with children as young as 8 to adults in their 80’s, I believe whoever you are, whatever age you are, learning to improve your breath or correct a dysfuntion can be extremely beneficial.

Having trained in multiple breathing techniques with:

Buteyko Clinic InternationalThe Breathing Institute, The Yoga Teacher College & Inspirational Breathin, I undertake appointments internationally online & locally in my home studio in West Sussex as well as bespoke workshops, retreats & other events across the UK.

Please feel free to browse my website www.Breathgal.com contact me via [email protected] or 07854 170426 or on socials @BreathGal to find out more or get in touch with any questions you may have.

shelba richesSheba Riches – Dover, Canterbury, and Ramsgate

Hello, I’m Sheba. I trained and qualified as a Buteyko Breathing Instructor with Patrick McKeown.

I am also a certified hypnotherapist and TFT, (tapping) practitioner and can offer these additional therapies alongside the Buteyko Breathing Programme, (BBP) to aid in the acceleration of  your therapeutic progress.

After years of research and training, I became passionate about helping others manage or eliminate many issues affecting the quality of their life. Many of my clients make huge breakthroughs and leave the programme feeling stronger, more relaxed, calm and confident.

I have successfully helped many clients with anxiety and asthma find the relief they needed, either through the BBP or my unique 3 way therapy programme, combining Buteyko, Hypnosis and/or TFT to deliver positive and lasting results. When all three are combined, the results are far reaching.

I see my role as being the catalyst to helping people reduce or eliminate their anxiety and/or asthma, with the fundamental goal of empowering them with these techniques, which they will always have at their disposal, should the issues ever arise again in the future.

Whether you wish to opt for the Buteyko Breathing Programme, or the combined therapy approach, I can offer you a free, no obligation, 10 minute taster session, where you can experience some of the benefits for yourself and see whether you wish to sign up for either programme.

Alternatively, if preferred, I can offer a free, no obligation 10 minute consultation call, where we can discuss your needs and see if you feel we’d make a good fit.

One on one or group sessions via Zoom, or if local and preferred, in person.Contact me to book your taster session/consultation call.

Caroline MillerCaroline Miller

Hello, my name is Caroline and I specialise in helping those who are experiencing chronic pain. One’s pain response can be amplified with dysfunctional breathing. My unique ‘Move with Ease’ approach is a multimodal treatment that combines breath retraining (Buteyko Method), clinical massage therapy, pain reprocessing therapy and corrective movement. As pain is complicated, tackling it from several perspectives not only improves quality of life and reduces discomfort, but also gives you empowering life skills. Chronic pain is debilitating, impacting all areas of life, disrupting sleep, causing anxiety and depression, social isolation and extinguishes joy from life. The Buteyko Method is a cornerstone of my ‘Move with Ease’ approach helping those with anxiety, stress, sleep apnea, back and neck pain, TMJD, headaches and migraines, and asthma, amongst others. I have a special interest in working with asthmatics and used this client group for my clinical massage therapy dissertation. The results were positive and have even better outcomes when including the Buteyko Method.

I work from my tranquil garden studio in the Kentish village of Laddingford ME18 England and am here to welcome you either in person or online.

Marie CockerellMarie Cockerell – Deal, Kent

My career began as an NHS podiatrist. On seeing how poor posture affected gait, and the importance of functional movement, I decided to train as a yoga teacher 15 years ago. This is where my breath work journey began. Fascinated with the many forms of yoga breathing and their impact on our nervous system, I continued more in depth learning and training with Phillip Xerri a senior pranayama teacher.I teach yoga through a lens of embodiment, using our body in ways to change our state.Breathwork has been a fundamental part of this process. How we breathe affects how we are, and how we are affects how we breathe.

I’m dedicated to helping people move better, breathe more freely and find tools to enhance their human experience.

Functional breathwork has been pivotal in my life. As a competitive coastal rower developing more efficient breathing is improving my performance, and it is a skill I am sharing with my crew and club members.

I have also suffered with bouts of anxiety and insomnia for which breathwork has been an amazing tool to soothe my own nervous system.I work with adults who wish to improve their wellbeing through any combination of movement, embodiment, functional breathing and somatic relaxation enquiry.I am based in Deal, Kent on the South East Coast of the UK.

uk EvaTannerEva Tanner – Buteyko London, Oxford and Dorset

Eva has become a Buteyko instructor from a dental hygiene and therapy background. She has worked in private practice since 1997 believing in prevention, education and minimal intervention. There is increasing awareness of the link between habitual mouth breathing and orofacial myofunctional patterns and how they cause craniofacial changes, poor jaw formation and alignment, which can lead to malocclusion of the dentition and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). Eva uses both Orofacial Myology and Buteyko breathing techniques to help to improve resting posture and functional patterns of the stomatognathic system.

Lee thompson imgLee Thompson – Cornwall

After years of reading self-help books and undertaking alternative therapies to help with my own mental health issues, I discovered through yoga and pranayama the power of proper breathing.

It was a revelation to me that my breathing was dysfunctional and had been since I was a child. This led me to study as much on functional breathing as I could. I discovered Patrick McKeown and I can’t overstate what an effect the man and his teaching of the Buteyko method has had on my life. I knew I had to become an instructor and help others

I’d like to work with adults and teenagers with Anxiety, Panic attack and sleep disorders. I come at it with a spiritual leaning suited to calming the breath and mind, easing the spirit. I’m open to working with clients with asthma and COPD too.

Based in beautiful Cornwall.

elena west imgElena West – Truro, Cornwall

Buteyko Breathing Instructor, yoga instructor, massage therapist and martial arts practitioner based in Truro, Cornwall.

2020 was a challenging year on many levels. However, I additionally went through some personal struggles (family loss). At the same time, I challenged myself to travel to Japan to take 6th Dan in Jodo (martial art). This created a lot of built up stress and anxiety before the examination. During this time, I found I could get through the stress and emotions by controlling and slowing down my breath. After succeeding in passing the examination I wanted to study breathing methods more deeply. That is when I discovered the Buteyko method, and subsequently qualified as a practitioner.

Professionally, I have a medical background, trained as a midwife in a medical college in Russia, afterwards, in 1993 trained as a massage therapist and yoga instructor. In 1998 I graduated with a degree in Sports Exercise and Therapies and completed my Ph.D. in 2003.

At my yoga classes Buteyko Method is now included.

I am happy working with teenagers and adults with:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Irregular breathing
  • Asthma
  • Anxiety
  • Also to enhance well being
  • Performance enhancement in sports

Face-to-face as well as online appointments can be organised.

Small group work and workshops available.

Appointments can be carried out in either Russian or English languages.

Robyn DylanRobyn Dylan – South Devon

My journey with Buteyko began when my neurodiverse children hit their teens. Being menopausal at the time, it was a world of volcanoes and the abyss. My Daughter’s asthma got worse – to be fair, everything got worse. The NHS could only offer pills & inhalers. We declined the first and my Daughter relied heavily on the latter.

Cutting a long story short, I became aware of breathwork (thank goodness) and Buteyko. What a revelation! We changed our breathing patterns through Buteyko, saw the absolute importance of how we breathe – the more I learned and integrated, the calmer I and our home became. It worked on both my daughter’s asthma and our stress levels. I have now been working with Buteyko for four years, mainly working with stress and/or asthma. I offer in person sessions in Totnes, Devon or on zoom anywhere. As well as a Buteyko Instructor, I am a certified Breathwork Practitioner in Circular breathwork and a Rebirthing Practitioner. I am also qualified in TRE®.

Julia WitherspoonJulia Witherspoon – Sturminster Newton, Dorset

I’m Julia and as well as being a certified Buteyko breathing instructor, I am a BANT registered nutritional therapist. I am also passionate about brain health and nurturing our brain as we age to reduce our risk of succumbing to a neurological disorder down the line.

I had been working in the field of women’s menopause health and knew nothing about functional breathing when a chance encounter with a GP and Buteyko instructor began my own journey to better breathing. It was a lightbulb moment and to be honest completely blew my mind. This was potentially the missing piece of the health puzzle for me, my clients, all menopausal women and every single brain on the planet that had never heard of the super-power that is efficient breathing.

Having then done my own breathing re-education, I decided to become a practitioner myself, as I felt this additional skill would knit beautifully into my work supporting women with the health of their menopausal body, brain and mind.

I typically attract therefore women over 40, but am absolutely happy to work with anyone over the age of 18 who would like to improve the way they breathe for the benefit of their health, whether they have asthma, sleep disordered breathing, insomnia or anxiety and panic attacks.

Breathing correctly can also reduce chronic fatigue, support better blood pressure, benefit our immune function, exercise performance, nervous system, digestive health, cardiovascular health and more.

Nutrition support can be incorporated if desired.

I am based near Sturminster Newton in Dorset and work in person and on-line.
